The short version

One country, a dozen different trips

Thailand runs from the misty hills of the north to a thousand islands in the south, with a fast, friendly capital in between. Few places pack temples, beaches and some of the world's best food into one trip so easily.

We are building this guide the way a friend who knows the country would write it: which tours earn their baht, where to base yourself in each region, and how to time the temples, markets and islands so you see them at their best.

Good to know

Before you go

How many days do I need in Thailand?

Ten days lets you pair a city such as Bangkok or Chiang Mai with a stretch on the islands. Two weeks adds room to slow down and see more than one region without rushing.

When is the best time to visit Thailand?

The cool, dry season from November to March is the most comfortable across most of the country. The two coasts have opposite rainy seasons, so there is almost always a beach in season somewhere.

Do I need a visa for Thailand?

Many nationalities get a visa exemption for short stays on arrival. The exact length and rules change, so check the current requirements for your passport before you travel.

Is Thailand expensive?

It is one of the better-value destinations in the region. Street food and guesthouses keep costs low, while resorts and islands sit higher. Most trips land comfortably in the middle.

How do I get around Thailand?

Cheap domestic flights cover the long distances, trains and buses link the regions, and ferries reach the islands. In the cities, app-based rides keep things simple.
